Have you ever wanted your own personal assistant? Ever wanted someone to remember birthdays and appointments then remind you when they come up?

Well let me introduce you to Sandy. Sandy is a virtual personal assistant, that I have found very useful. (and free :))

Lets say I want to tell her to remind me to call a friend tonight. I can just send her an email saying, “Remind me to call Jonathan tonight”, then around 8, I get an email reminding me.

She can also remember phone numbers.

Remember that Jonathans phone number is 8675309.

Another possible one is…

Remind me to update my twitter @daily

If you want to add something to your todo list…

Remind me to finish my homework @todo

And every day she will send you your daily digest, which is your todos and any things you have coming up that day.

Soon they will have a feature, which I really want, that will allow you ask her questions like, “What is Jonathan’s phone number?”.

In conclusion this is a website that has become a big part of my every day routine, and I suggest Sandy to anybody who needs a little extra help staying organized.

Logging your life.

October 14th, 2007

The other day I ran into research project done by microsoft called, MyLifeBits.

MyLifeBits is a lifetime store of everything. It is the fulfillment of Vannevar Bush’s 1945 Memex vision including full-text search, text & audio annotations, and hyperlinks. There are two parts to MyLifeBits: an experiment in lifetime storage, and a software research effort.

In the experiment, Gordon Bell captured everything, cds, cards, books, articles, letters, memos, photos, and is now starting to record phone calls, im transcripts, television, and radio.

Most people would ask, “Why would you want to log your life?”. Well one of the main reasons is total recall, being able to remember any point in your life.

They have also created a device they call the sensecam. The sensecam is a camera that you wear around you neck that will take pictures when it notices a large change in the view.

This project is mainly geared towards amnesia victims. In a test that they preformed, they saw that after 2 weeks the person with the sensecam could remember an event almost completely, when before, they would of completely forgotten it. Sometimes I have that same problem though.

Total recall sounds really cool to me, so I’m going to give life logging a try.

I started to write my own program that is basically a exe form of a tumblr blog that will store the data in a sqlite database. A more private form, with some added posts types like webcam and audio. I will post here when I am finished with it.

Using Gmail and Clipmail to make backups.

August 14th, 2007

Being that most of my school work is programming, I have to make a ton of backups because my computer is not the most stable environment. Currently I put most of them on my external hard drive, but I don’t trust that either. So I have wrote this program to have a free, remote and stable backup environment.

Here is how I have it set up.

First get clipmail.

When you run it, it will ask you for you smtp information.

After that, it will run in the background. Then when you hit ctrl+e, it will send your clipboard contents to your email address with the subject being the current title and a time stamp. The email will be from clipboard@blueshirtstudio.com .

Now to set up gmail.

All I did was create a filter to send any email with that address to its on folder called clipboard, and I told it to skip the inbox.

So when I have my code open, I copy the text, then hit ctrl+e and I auto magically have the a code backup.

This will work with any email program though, as long as it can filter address.

Anyway,

Enjoy!

Text shortcuts with Texter

August 14th, 2007

Are you tired of typing the same phrases over and over again. Are you making the same spelling mistake to often. Then have I found the program for you. Texter, as Adam Pash over at Life Hacker said, Is a “Text substitution app Texter saves you countless keystrokes by replacing abbreviations with commonly used phrases you define.”

For instance, a big mistake I make to often is I forget to captilze my i’s. With Texter any time I type a lower case I it will automagicly turn it into a capital i.

It can also expand your common phrase. Like for instance, ttyl.

So make sure you check out this app, it might save you some time.
