Keep your number secret but still get calls

December 19th, 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I came across this cool service today while surfing the web.

The service is called Numbr, and it gives you a temporary phone number that will forward calls to your real number keeping your number secret and safe from reverse look-ups.

It also has a bunch of great features like:

  • Adding multiple numbers so it will call the second if you don’t answer the first.
  • Automatically block calls after 9pm.
  • When someone calls you, it asks them for a intro statment, then it will play it to you and ask you if you accept. You have an option to turn that off.
  • Email your incoming call history.
  • Forward all calls to voice mail.

And all of this is available for free and in 3 simple steps. Just got to Numblr.com. Hit “Get your free number”. Type in your real phone number, and hit submit.

It even gives you a widget for you website or blog.

This service is very simular to the temparay email services like GuerrillaMail.

Tumblr is 1337!

December 14th, 2007

Today while I was looking at the source code of one of my Tumblr.com posts, I noticed that at the bottom of the page they have iframe with a z-index of 1337.

Clip2Net

For those that don’t know, in css the z-index sets the stack order of an element. So its basically setting what layer the element is on. Maybe they just really wanted to make sure that its the top layer. ;)

You can’t hide it Tumblr, we know you think you are leet, and I’m going to have to agree with you.

Anyone else think Tumblr is leet?

Some hidden Mac OS X settings

December 14th, 2007

Just ran across this blog post which list 15 settings in Mac osx that can only be accessed from the terminal. Below are what I think are some of the more useful ones.

Note: The terminal is located in the Utility folder which is in the Applications folder.

1. defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES
Makes hidden applications’ dock icons translucent. NO to reverse.
Translucent dock icons hidden applications

This one is pretty useful because it makes it so you can easily tell which windows are buried and which ones are hidden.
6. /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background
Displays the currently chosen screen saver to be shown as the desktop background. Press Control-C or Command-. to stop. More details here.

Haven’t tried this one yet, but sounds pretty awesome.

13. defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Shows hidden files in the finder. Replace TRUE with FALSE to hide hidden files again

Always useful, especially when making .dmgs.

15. defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
Deactivates Dashboard. Requires the dock to be relaunched to take effect, so type “killall Dock” and press enter. Replace YES with NO to enable again.

The dashboard is not something I use very often, and I’m sure it takes up a bunch of memory.

A gmail feature you probably don’t already know about.

December 13th, 2007

I found an interesting gmail feature today when I was sending a friend an email.

I made a mistake by sending an email to joeblow@gmail.com instead of joe.blow@gmail.com, and to my suprise it still got to him.

This is a quote from the gmail help page when I clicked learn more in my email.

1197516827-29313-3kb.jpg

Because Gmail doesn’t recognize dots as characters within usernames, adding or removing dots from a Gmail address won’t change the actual destination address. Messages sent to yourusername@gmail.com and y.o.u.r.u.s.e.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com are all delivered to your inbox, and only yours.

Well thats good to know.

One of the only ways to use this I can think of is to track which sites are sending you spam.

Next time you sign up for a new forum or newsletter, add a dot or two in your email address, then when you receive spam just check to see what address it was sent to.

This seems like something they would talk about more.

Any ideas why it isn’t?
